Sinohydrosaurus
Actual Fossil In the
Chinese Museum

Please Read before you order.

This reptile fossil  was found in the Yixian Formation in Lingyuan, Liaoning Province, China.  It is a relatively new discovery, having been first formally described and named in 1999 by Li Jianjun and colleagues of the Beijing Natural History Museum. Also in 1999, working independently, Gao Keqin and others at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing named the same species "Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis" -- being completely unaware that they were working with the counter-slab of the same specimen that the other team was studying!  The two names are used interchangeably today, although Sinohydrosaurus is easier to remember while Hyphalosaurus is now the official name. Sinohydrosaurus’ name translates into "China" (sino) "Water" (hydro) "Lizard" (saurus), with the suffix "lingyuanensis" added to honor the place of its discovery.  This animal was neither a fish nor an amphibian. Rather, it was a reptile that phylogenetically descended from a land-dwelling ancestor (similar to how the ancestors of whales were once land dwellers) to become a fresh-water dweller. Like virtually all fossils from this brittle rock formation, the specimen shattered during excavation and has been reassembled from smaller pieces and backed with a rigid hardboard (see last photo) for long-lasting strength.  This is a diapsid reptile, which includes all dinosaurs.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This legally imported genuine fossil dinosaur reptile specimen is a Keichousaur from the Guanling formation in Xingyi, Guizhou, China and is about 215 million years old. Keichousaur is a member of the Nothosauria order of long-necked marine animals and lived during the Triassic Period, and went extinct during the later Triassic period. They probably evolved into the plesiosaurs as a result of changing environment. Keichousaur was neither a fish nor an amphibian. Rather, it was a reptile that phylogenetically descended from a land-dwelling ancestor -- similar to how the ancestors of whales were once land dwellers. They ranged from a few inches to 20 feet long. Keichousaurus had four wide, paddle-like limbs with webbed fingers and toes, a long neck with a slender skull set with many sharp teeth (the front teeth were longer than the back teeth), nostrils located on the top end of the snout because they breathed air (but spent most of the time in the water), a short compact body, and a very long tail.

Fossils from Morocco

MOSASAUR TEETH

Mosasaur: was a giant, meat-eating marine reptiles ( it is not a dinosaur) that lived during the late Cretaceous period. It was up to 33ft (10 m) long. Mosasaurs had four paddle-like limbs on a long, streamlined body and a long, powerful tail. The large head had huge jaws (up to 4.7 ft =1.45 m long) with many teeth. The jaws could open about 3 feet (1 m). The lower jaw is loosely hinged to the skull with a moveable joint on each side (behind the teeth). This loose joint let it swallow huge prey, like some snakes. They hunted fish, turtles, mollusks, and shellfish. Our Mosasaur fossils were found in the Phosphate mines of Khouribga, Morocco. They date back to about the Jurassic Age.

Note if you want your tooth put into a display case just add $5.00 more to your purchase.. like you see for the mosasaur tooth.

Description: (Glo-bi-denz) named for the rounded globular shape of its teeth, designed for crushing hard-shelled mollusks, like ammonites. Globidens is a fairly small, specialized mosasaur with a short, massive head, and jaws containing bulbous to blunt-tipped teeth with strongly constricted bases . The estimated length of an average Globidens would have been about 18-20 ft, with the skull measuring about 19 in. Examples from this species have been found in North America, Africa, Europe, Middle East, and South America .

Captorhinus agutti # 13

Age: Permian -225 million years
Location: Oklahoma
Size: 14" long
Cost: $ 1800
Item # : rep/capto13-app1800

What it may have looked like.

FYI: THIS IS A REAL FOSSIL AND NOT A CAST OR MODEL. It is a mount of a Complete Adult Permian reptile on matrix. The species name is Captorhinus Agutti (cope). The bones are found in a loose matrix bone bed. They are cleaned and mounted on to this piece of matrix. There is less then 10% restoration to the skull. Only a few cracks filled and parts to lower near the back. All teeth are real. All leg bones, Pelvis, ribs, vertebra, and Toes are real with no restoration.  The skull measures just over 2 inches long. The skeleton measuring along the spine is over 14.5 inches from nose to tail. We personally collected all material, and have done all restoration work. The reconstruction is very well done. I have been working on this species for 8 years. Just look at the photos. This is one of the very first reptiles to be found in the fossil record. The Permian age is dated around 280 millions years old. The Dinosaurs came after this time period in the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. This is a super find for any museum or collector. The formation is Arroyo. It was found near Lawton, Oklahoma. The last four photos are from a University of Kansas Paleontologic contribution which is our reference for the reconstruction of the reptile. The book is not included. But I can offer a copy if wanted. .

FYI:
The bones are all real including the ribs.  The ribs are put
together from smaller pieces so upon close inspection you should be able to
see the joints.  I have done no restoration to any of the body parts.  The
skull has an estimated 10% restoration.  To restore the cracks in
the skull they are filled in, textured, and coloured.  The teeth are all
real - I haven't  restored teeth.

I realize that purchasing one of specimens
isn't inexpensive and it can be difficult to make a decision based on
photos.  Please be assured that the bones are all real but some are put
together from pieces, especially the ribs.  One can find many good bones in
a rich pocket at the Oklahoma quarry and the bones of the body usually are
complete (there are more than enough that the broken ones don't need to be
used).  Some, like the edges of the shoulder girdle can be chipped and
missing but I haven't restored these.
