Please be patient as there are many images to view

The Devonian Period was when the evolution of the plants began to colonize dry land at a tremendous rate. At this time the most luxuriant vegetation was to be found in the tropics, but plants also carpeted the colder climate land masses. The fossil record shows that plants, especially ferns, covered much of the United States. Trees, as we know them today, did not exist during the Devonian period. In close association with this explosive spread, plants also diversified into numerous species that are still with us today.

Plants from the Paleocene Age

These leaf fossils are of the Cenozoic Era- Tertiary Period in time which would date it close to 58 million years old (early Paleocene Epoch). At that time, this northern region Tertiary Woodlands was a swampy lowland with a subtropical to tropical climate similar to the areas of South Florida today.

The formation it was found in today consists of silt, sandstone, clay , mudstone and lignite in ancient river, lake and swamp sediments. Remains of plants are not commonly preserved because they rapidly decay after they die. Those under water are preserved when rapidly covered with sediment.
