BARITE ROSES
ROSE ROCKS OF OKLAHOMA Rose rocks ,the reddish-brown sandy crystals of Barite that
resemble a rose in full bloom are more abundant in Oklahoma than anywhere else
on earth. The rose –like appearance of the rock’s petal-shaped clusters is due
to the inter-growth of the crystals of barite as a cluster of divergent blades.
Well formed specimens like the ones you see here are highly prized and have
become a basic part of most mineral collections and a great conversation piece
,and are truly one of Mother Nature’s oddities… The rose rock became the
official state rock of Oklahoma on April 8,1968. The Rose rock is also called
Barite Rose or Sand Barite rosette and many Indian Folklore have been created
due to this rock. |
