Jurassic Bones

In the middle of the Jurassic period there were the first reptile like mammals that remained under cover during the reign of the dinosaur. The Jurassic period extended from about 200 million years ago to 146 million years. The Jurassic was named by Alexandree Brogniart for the extensive marine limestone exposures of the Jura Mountains in the region where Germany, France, Switzerland meet.

Sara

An extinct order of herbivorous dinosaurs, including the genera Stegosaurus, Omosaurus, and their allies. Stegosaurian dinosaurs are herbivorous and four legged.  They are unique in their two longitudinal rows of plates and spines on the back to tail and are up to 9 m in length. They appear to have five fingers per “hand”, but only three functional toes per foot.  Stegosaurians flourished during Jurassic period and are unique among ornithischians for their lack of ossified tendons, a feature which could be related to the peculiar form of the dorsals. Their small teeth and forelimbs indicate the feeding habit of browsing on small plants. Plates might have been used for thermo-regulation.

Dinosaur Safaris Inc (DSI) unearthed Sarah near Shell Wyoming this past summer.  DSI is a private corporation whose mission is to discover, excavate, study, and preserve dinosaur fossils and related artifacts. The company is currently working on a private ranch in the Big Horn Basin, Wyoming. In addition, DSI has a small group of buildings located in the town of Shell, Wyoming, which include a preparation lab and storage facility. Bob Simon of Spotsylvania, Virginia is the President and Chief Operating Officer of DSI. In addition Two Guys Fossils is the only authorized fossil dealer to offer many of these dinosaur fossils for sale.

In the summer of 2004, Mr. Simon made the extraordinary discovery of SARAH, a stegosaurus. DSI is currently booking paleontology expeditions for the summer of 2006.

Miscellaneous Dinosaur Bones
from our dig site in Wyoming.

This the way  we prepare the bones found at out dig site

Tough to get good pictures of the large bones. Here is a series of pictures of a Diplodocus femur in half-jacket. It is approximately 51 inches in length. The bone is actually black. The whitish or light coloring on the bone is a combination of gypsum coating, dust and some stabilizer. The one separate piece is a thin piece from the proximal end (near the hip) which may or may not be reattached. The exposed portion of the bone is the underside when found. There are of course fractures but I believe it is virtually if not 100% minus some very small pieces. Most of the matrix was removed from the exposed portion of the femur prior to jacketing and flipping it.
